The collection of short stories “Barbuda” by Sepideh Zamani was published in 2017 by Nazar and Bedoon publishers in Tehran.
Sepideh Zamani’s collection consists of nine short stories. The stories deal with different topics and by analyzing the atmosphere of routine events from the writer’s perspective, she portraits a new world in front of us.
Barbuda is about a research medical doctor going on a work related mission to an Island , a mysterious, beautiful and calm place with hot and humid seasonal rain.
This is an environment that allows this research doctor, away from the hustle and bustle of modern life and alongside her duties, experiences metaphysical events of a different world which are in direct contrast to her scientific knowledge and
background. inability to talk about what she was experiencing and seasonal rain in island which was similar to homeland bring her back memories from her childhood.
In choosing the topics of her stories, Sepideh Zamani opens up the body of human relationships in front of her readers and invites her readers to seek the hidden truth in every character and subject in her stories.
The cold tone of the stories gives the reader the impression that the author is, like a projector, standing at a safe or pre-arranged distance looking at humans’ relationships. The fact is the author, in choosing the minute signs that form the most significant part of our existence, describes the link between the two in order to show that whatever goes on around us in connecting or separating human beings, play a very important part.
The stories in the collection are: Go Home, Attar, My Dreams, Barbuda, I Don’t Know Him, An Unfinished Report, Wonderment, The Will, and Amber.
This collection in 80 pages was published by Bedoon Publication and was prepared for publication by The Research and Cultural Institute Nazar Publication.
A short extract from the story Go Home:
The priest began his sermon thus:
Go home
Go home
Go home
And he went on:
“Forgive. Forgive them and go back home. If you are a father or a mother forgive so your child should return home. If you are a child and peeve and upset with your father and mother, forgive them and return home. Go back home.”
